Free chicken coop poultry has become a popular trend. Whether you are raising your chickens or ordering them from a farmer, you need to know how to pluck them before you cook them. Your chicken has already been euthanized, or you may have to do the dirty work before you start. Follow these instructions to pluck your chicken so that it is one step closer to the dining room table.

Step 1

Place a large saucepan of water (large enough to hold a chicken) on the stove. Let it boil. Remove the saucepan from the stove and take it outside.

Step 2

Put on a pair of thick rubber gloves and grab the chicken by the legs. Dip it in the hot water.

Step 3

Take a stick or a long kitchen utensil (like a wooden spoon) and hold the chicken under hot water so it doesn’t float. Swirl it around in the water to make sure all the feathers are completely soaked.

Step 4

Remove the chicken from the water after just 5-10 seconds (longer you can start cooking the chicken). Grab a handful of feathers and start plucking them, handful after handful. Plucking the chicken can take 5 to 30 minutes. More time is needed if there are many feathers.
